A Quest to Make a Positive Change in Libya
Empowering Tomorrow: A Women's Journey for a Positive Change in Libya.
A Journey of Compassion and Inspiring a brighter future
In the heart of Benghazi, resides a remarkable woman whose unwavering commitment to the children in Libya is improving lives and inspiring hope. May Nabous, a devoted mother of two girls, has dedicated her life to serving the vulnerable as an Emergency Officer at the UNICEF Benghazi Field Office.
Born and raised in Benghazi, May has always been deeply connected to her community. Her journey in the humanitarian field began in 2012 when she was just a student, working part-time as a Child Protection Officer with Save the Children Organization. It was during this time that May experienced the aftermath of the Libyan revolution, witnessing the massive displacement of people.
“I saw families flee their homes, children being separated from their parents, and the devastating impact it had on the community. That's when I realized I needed to make a positive change and help those in need." Reflecting on her early experiences, May shares.
Driven by her passion, May decided to continue a career in the humanitarian field. "I felt a strong calling to do something for my home, my people, and alleviate their suffering. I wanted to be a part of the positive change," she expresses.
A warrior in the face of challenges
In 2019, May's journey led her to UNICEF. She joined as the first national staff member in the newly established office in Benghazi. She wholeheartedly believed that joining UNICEF marked a pivotal milestone in her career, as it offered her the invaluable opportunity to make a direct and substantial contribution to an organization that works to improve the lives of children and families.
Just two weeks after the establishment of the UNICEF field office in Benghazi, a tragic incident occurred, claiming the lives of UN personnel. This devastating event had led to access constraints and many challenges in delivering UNICEF programs. For the next eight months, she single-handedly ran the office, ensuring essential operations continued.".
Despite the immense responsibility, her commitment to serving her community pushed her to take on multiple roles. May became a focal point, not only for emergency tasks but also for operational support and coordination efforts with government authorities, partners, and other UN agencies. As an Emergency Officer, May's primary focus is ensuring the preparedness of UNICEF to respond effectively to emergencies through collaborating closely with all the various UNICEF sections to provide immediate support when it is most needed.
A Mother's Dedication to Protecting Children's Rights in Libya
One of May's most painful yet impactful experiences was collaborating with the Libyan Red Crescent Society to provide
lifesaving assistance to 12,000 internally displaced families and children who had fled their homes due to the conflict in Tripoli. These families had lost everything - their homes, belongings, and even their loved ones.
"Whether it's providing recreational activities for children, distributing hygiene kits to displaced families, or responding to natural disasters like floods, I have seen the positive impact of UNICEF's work on the lives of vulnerable individuals." May explains.
As a mother, May's role as an Emergency Officer takes on special significance. "I can deeply relate to the needs, fears, and hopes that other mothers have for their children," she shares. May feels the responsibility to fulfill those concerns for every child in Libya including her own children. "I can only do my utmost best to create a better future for all children, ensuring their rights are fulfilled and their well-being protected," she expresses.
May's journey with UNICEF has transformed her perspective on life, making her deeply aware of the daily struggles people face. "I consider it a privilege to work for an organization that, works to positively impact the lives of so many families and children," she acknowledges. Through her work with UNICEF, May strives to empower and protect her own children while also creating a brighter future for countless others.
