As we celebrate International Women's Day, we take this opportunity to honor the remarkable contributions of women to the social, economic, and political fabric of Libya. Under the 2024 theme of "Investing in Women: Accelerating Progress", we recognize the resilience, courage, and determination of Libyan women as they strive to overcome obstacles and create a more inclusive and equitable society.
UN in Libya has been at the forefront of empowering women and promoting equality between men and women in Libya. Through various initiatives and programs, we have supported women in building resilience and breaking down barriers to contribute significantly to the Libyan economy. Women leaders in Libya are driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development, showcasing their invaluable role in economic growth and resiliency.
The forthcoming municipal elections in Libya mark an important milestone in women's political participation, with a significant increase in the number of potential women candidates and increasing interest across the country. By actively engaging in the democratic process, women are shaping the future of their communities and championing the issues that matter most to them. Inclusive governance is vital for sustainable development and peace consolidation, and the meaningful participation of women in political life strengthens democratic institutions and promotes social progress.
On this International Women's Day, we also recognize and support all the women and girls affected by the devastating floods in Derna. It is essential to prioritize their needs and rights in the humanitarian response and recovery efforts, ensuring their empowerment and full participation in the reconstruction process.
Together, we can build a more inclusive and equitable society in Libya, where every voice is heard and every individual has the opportunity to contribute to the nation's progress. Let us continue to champion women's empowerment, working towards a brighter future for all.
